Pizza Worth Waiting For...     May 25-27, 2018

Thanks to close friends, Jody BB#039 & Kevin, who wanted to share Rowley with all of us... this is a very short snippet of our weekend.

What can I say about Rowley, Alberta. Other than the fact that it’s one of the most interesting places that I’ve been to in a long time, there’s a fantastic thing that happens on the last Saturday of the month there.

The town comes alive with people from far and wide. All coming to hang out and experience the local culture and meet people from everywhere!

You show up at this sleepy little place and think to yourself, “hmmm it’s so quiet here…it’s not busy, shouldn’t take too long to get pizza”.

Then, before you blink, the town is absolutely bursting at the seams with people from everywhere, standing in line to put in their order and then go across the street to Sams Saloon to drink, socialize and wait… While you wait, there’s lots to do. You can stand and people watch, go across the road to the picnic area to meet new people, walk around to see other interesting campers that might show up…like a fibreglass trailer group or a vintage VW group that showed up while we were there!

If none of that interests you… you can try to keep up to the guy running his butt off, delivering finished pizzas to the bar AND giving guided tours of the town buildings! He might even help make the pizzas…I’m not sure. It just seemed that he was everywhere that I looked…

Now, the pizza situation. It is completely volunteer run. I think they made approximately 200 pizzas while we were there on Saturday night!!! What a HUGE thing! You wait in line, put in your order, they give you a number and you wait….  It starts out all organized and orderly…but after a while, I can only guess how confusing the kitchen process must be…because the pizzas start to come out of the kitchen, out of “order”.

After a bit longer, people have had a few drinks and are getting hungry…and start to get more and more excited to see the stack of pizzas come out that door…everyone is watching that door… THE PIZZA DOOR....

Then…when you get your pizza, it’s like you’ve won the lottery!! People are cheering and sitting down together to eat and talk and laugh!

I have never seen anything so crazy, bring people together like this. It was reminiscent of a huge family picnic from my much younger years. I kind of half expected to see a 3-legged or sack race spontaneously happen…

The pizza was well worth the wait. It was hot and gooey and delicious.

We did wait a while, but it was SO worth it!!

“Located near the badlands of Alberta, Rowley is just eight people short of a ghost town. A once-busy grain elevator on the wheat pool railway stretch, the tiny town now serves as a time capsule of pioneer life complete with a dusty old saloon that’s allegedly haunted by a Chinese bootlegger. The grain elevator closed, then the train that brought up to 900 tourists a week stopped running.

If it weren’t for a handful of living people, Rowley would be a pretty spooky place. There are dolls in place of children at the schoolhouse and mannequins populate the desolate buildings. But Rowley hasn’t given up the ghost yet. Once a month the saloon swells with hundreds of people from the surrounding area for a party called, “pizza night” and the revenue is donated to maintain Rowley’s historic charm.”

5 Facts About Rowley

Coffee Table Book Project

January 29, 2018

The question that I ask myself…. Why? Why does the creative side of my brain always seem to go 100 mph? Since the conception of the "Boler Bitches" I have wanted to write a book. Not just a little book…. But a real book…. A book that every boler enthusiast or vintage trailer lover would love to have sitting on their coffee table. The concept is simple…. All I need to do is gather a collection of stories from other boler & vintage camper owners and put them collectively into a lovely book...   Simple right?

The journey so far of creating & designing a book has been very rewarding and at times a little trying. I was born with a creative mind, when I get a vision in my head I want to execute it to the highest standard. I couldn’t even attempt this without the participation of other individuals. I am so very grateful for the flood of stories and photos that are now being submitted. I struggle at the thought that I just simply will not be able to use every story and every photo that has been submitted. This is where my creative side starts planning another project before I have even finished the first one! I hope with all my heart I can pull this off! I have one shot at this book…. One chance to make my vision of creating a high quality book that is dedicated so many of our passions and hobbies, boler trailers & vintage campers. My dream is that this book is published by the 50th Anniversary Caravan Gathering in Winnipeg, MB August 2018. Here is to hoping….Cheers!

Rusty's road trip 2017

March 22, 2017

Well, it has taken me 3 years to convince my caring & protective husband to let me take "Rusty B", my 1973 13ft boler trailer, down the Oregon Coast and into California. So there we have it. The adventures began October 7, 2016, on a snowy winter day in Red Deer, Alberta. We hitched "Rusty B" and hit the open road...... The Adventures begin!

We started off in some, not so nice weather, snow, rain, some sun....so, typical Alberta weather. This was the first trip that "Rusty B" has made across International borders.

The US border guard was super kind. He asked me, "So, what is the purpose of your visit?" As per usual, I responded that we have a place in California and that we are heading down to stay for a few months. He asked a few other questions.... and then asked, "what is the purpose of you bringing the trailer?" My response, "We are going to use it for camping in....?"

Like, HELLO... why else would I bring a camper to California? He was confused, why would I have a camper for holidays when you have a house??? Some people just don't get it....?

I like my camper more... We headed south in search of warmer weather and sunshine. Our first camping night was in Brandon, Oregon State Park. This was a very nice location, easy late checkin, great campsites and a small walk away from the beach!

We had arrived late in the evening, so we set up camp the next morning, made a delicious breakfast and coffee....mmmm camp coffee.

We took a 10 minute drive into the quaint fishing & crabbing coastal town of Brandon, Oregon. Here we discovered Tony's Crab Shack! What a great experience! We got our 3 day shellfish licence, rented a few crab traps & hit the docks. Crabbing is like riding a bike, once you learn you will never forget. I had grown up on the West Coast of British Columbia, Canada. I grew up on the water fishing and crabbing, but had forgotten how much fun it was.

You always catch something.....

The "She Wee" trials... the good, the bad and the moist...

February 12, 2017

I've always had a problem with having to drop my pants to my ankles and try not to pee on them and my feet while squatting in the bushes...it's not fair! Guys can pee anywhere when they're out in the wilderness.

I distinctly remember a day when I had to stop on the side of a busy highway because I just couldn't hold it any longer. I jumped out and ran around (okay, I waddled with my legs squeezed together) to the passenger side of my vehicle. I opened both doors for a little extra protection and squatted. All of the sudden, I hear all these horns beeping and I look down, only to realize that my butt was below the body of my vehicle! (note to self, get shorter vehicle!) Anyways, in my panic to try and lift my parts above the body line, I ended up peeing all over my pants and shoes... FML

I had been reading blogs about FUD's (feminine urination devices) and was really interested to try. Hours turn to days, then into weeks and I forgot all about it.

Christmas came along and my wonderful hubby got one for me!! I was so excited that I dropped everything and ran upstairs to see if I could do it...you know, stand up to pee.

You would think it would be easy. IT. IS. NOT. EASY. You really have to get out of your own head and forget everything that you've always known. Anyways, I got this incredibly narrow, funnel like devise and pressed it firmly against my lady parts and peed in the toilet standing up!! I was so impressed!

FYI...You do have to control the flow, or you run the risk of "overflowing" your itty bitty funnel...so keep that in mind.

Okay, so that was the good part. Now for the bad...and moist...

Doing something out of the ordinary while sober is relatively simple. Now add some friends...and lots of alcohol... lets just say that trying to stay upright and control the flow and hold your wee funnel firmly in place is not quite as simple when not sober. NUF SAID!

All in all, I do love my She Wee! I highly recommend it!
